This is the main page for the Per Aspera Ad Inferi dark fantasy campaign, using the Blood & Treasure Complete rules.
My Dark Fantasy homebrew campaign is set in Terra Innominata. Terra Innominata is my own world, which can be described as an amalgam of elements of all those darker and bleaker fantasy worlds out there. Major game inspiration has come from Tales of the Grotesque and Dungeonesque by Jack Shear, the Old World of Warhammer, Shadows of Esteren, Deus Vult (for the Legend RPG) and of course Ravenloft and horror RPGs like Call of Cthulhu and Kult.
Literary inspirations are the Witcher books by Andrzej Sapkowski, the First Law world books by Joe Abercrombie, the Conan and Solomon Kane tales by Robert E. Howard and the Hangman’s Daughter’s Tales by Oliver Pötzsch. Plus a hefty dose of movie inspiration from films like Black Death, Season of the Witch, Name of the Rose, The 13th Warrior, Brotherhood of the Wolf, Dracula, Penny Dreadful and all those cheesy 80s and 90s horror movies.
I let this setting grow from a few scenarios, jotting down notes about far away lands, people, politics, conflicts and slowly a world emerges from the dust.
Many standard fantasy tropes are there: the players can be humans, elves, dwarves and so on, but the world is much darker. Magic items are few and wizards run the risk of being tainted by chaos if they dabble too much in the Dark Arts.
I also use this setting for my published adventures, even if they are loose enough to be easily plopped down in any setting.
At this point there are two published adventures available from Lazy Sod Press. There’s another big one called Fiery the Angel Fell about 2/3 finished and a new short one (tentatively called Tomb of the War-Pig) brewing that I hope to finish this summer when I’m on vacation.
